Walking in the Light

The aged apostle penned some of the most well-known words to Christians near the end of the first century: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” {1 John 1:7}.

The first admonition is to walk in the light of God’s Word. The literal meaning of the phrase is to “keep on walking in the light.” John’s audience was admonished to continue to live the Christian life according to the words of God. The clause here is qualified with the word “if.” If one were to stop walking in the light of God’s Word one would no long be in the protection of the light.

Darkness is where all manner of evil lurks. Spiritual darkness, of course, is what the apostle is referring to. Jesus said that men would rather live in the darkness of sin than live in the light He gave the world {John 3:19-21}.

The blessed fellowship of the saints can only be enjoyed between two people when both are living by God’s standard.
