Buried with Christ

BURIED WITH CHRIST I Cor. 15: 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, According to a National Geographic article published October 31, 2016, a burial bed, which has not been studied by archaeologists previously, was unearthed October 28 inside what is called the “Church of the Holy Sepulchre” in Jerusalem. This particular site has long been considered by some people to be the tomb where Jesus Christ was buried. The original structure called “Church of the Holy Sepulchre” was built by the Emperor Constantine in 325 A.D. at the urging of his mother Helena, who was responsible for Constantine being called the first “christian emperor.” Two days earlier, researchers from the National Technical University of Athens removed marble cladding from the traditional burial site inside a shrine known as the Edicule and found only fill material inside. But just before a 60-hour investigation period of the site was set to end, researchers exposed a second marble slab with a cross carved in its surface and lifted it to expose an ancient limestone burial bed. Investigation also confirmed the existence of limestone cave walls within the site. The burial bed had been sealed since at least 1555 and likely centuries earlier, according to National Geographic, to prevent visitors from chipping away pieces of the original rock as souvenirs. After the 60-hour investigation period ended, the tomb was resealed for the indefinite future. It is likely a good thing that the supposed burial site was sealed. Otherwise, multitudes of people would immediately want to flock to the site to see the burial slab and start chipping away for souvenirs. When I first read this information, I wondered if there is any real estate for sale next to this supposed burial site of Jesus. I would just suspect there would be a lot of people who would want to be buried with Christ. Can you just imagine what price people would pay to be buried next to where Jesus was believed to have been buried? Of course, we know from the scriptures that the physical body of Christ is not there nor buried any other place in Jerusalem or elsewhere for that matter. After being seen alive after his burial, Luke tells us in Acts that Jesus ascended to heaven. Acts 1:9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.” However, because of the work of Christ, we can be buried with him! Not in a literal grave at a burial site in Jerusalem, but rather in baptism. When we obey the gospel, we are buried together with him and then raised to walk in a newness of life (Romans 6:3-6).The apostle Paul reminds the Christians at Colossae, they were “buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead” (Col. 2:12). Have you been buried with Christ? Rick Bright 12/7/2016
